The Helpline is pleased to offer a new and improved online course -  Tobacco Dependence Treatment & Behavioral Health.

This interactive, web-based course helps providers learn how to assess and treat tobacco dependence in tobacco users with co-occurring psychiatric and/or addictive disorders.

The course is 3 hours in length, and is broken down into separate modules.

Educational Objectives

Following completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:

  • Describe population-based trends of tobacco use among smokers with co-occurring mental health and/or substance use disorders.

  • Discuss the factors in mental health and addiction treatment settings that have served to maintain tobacco use in populations with mental health and/or substance use disorders.

  • Identify and implement evidence-based treatment for treating tobacco dependence.

Many smokers are motivated to make a quit attempt in the new year so it is a perfect time to talk to your patients and clients about quitting smoking. You can also order a variety of free materials from the California Smokers' Helpline in multiple languages and formats:

Free, New Patient Materials from the California Smokers' Helpline

The California Smokers' Helpline is pleased to offer free, new patient materials in English and Spanish, targeted to smokers who are pregnant or have children age 5 and under. These materials are available free of charge and shipping, and while there is no maximum order size, each order must total a minimum of 25 pieces.

In addition to promoting the Helpline's free evidence-based telephone counseling services, the materials promote free nicotine patches for qualified smokers who are pregnant or have children age 5 or under, mailed directly from the Helpline.

Helpline staff screen callers who request nicotine patches for contraindications, including pregnancy. For callers with contraindications, physician approval is required.

These new materials and free nicotine patches are made possible by funding from First 5 California.

2016 Awards for Excellence in California Helpline Promotion

The California Tobacco Control Program wants to see your materials and promotions in Print, Internet & New Media, Audio/Video, and Media Relations & Reports!

The contest is now open to California Tobacco Control Program-funded projects, health systems, health care providers, and other tobacco control advocates who promote the Helpline in local communities.

Entries are currently being accepted online, contest closes on May 31, 2016.

A $250 shopping spree for tobacco-related educational materials and Helpline promotional materials from the Tobacco Education Clearinghouse of California (TECC) will be awarded to the winner in each of the four categories.
