AA-Male-Doctor-and-White-Male-PatientThis free, 10-minute video provides an overview of the California Smokers' Helpline's free, evidence-based cessation services and  electronic referral (e-referral) options.

Proactive provider referral results in a higher quitline participation rate (30-40%) than simple advice to quit (3-4%). And, as a designated Specialized Registry, the Helpline may help eligible health professionals meet reporting standards such as Meaningful Use (MU), MACRA, MIPS and Joint Commission tobacco measures.

Presenters

Rina Edi, MD
Primary Care Physician
UCSan Diego Health

Rina Edi, MD is a primary care physician with UC San Diego Health and also  instructs medical students, residents and physicians in training at UC San Diego School of Medicine. She is the co-author of a study that looked at increasing physicians’ documentation and assessment of obesity and dietary counseling, which was published in Family Medicine.

Dr. Edi also serves as Medical Director of the California Smokers' Helpline and is the outpatient smoking cessation champion at UC San Diego Health. Dr. Edi completed a residency in family and community medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and earned her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine. She is also board-certified in family medicine.

Carrie Kirby, MA
Project Manager
California Smokers' Helpline

Carrie Kirby has been with the Helpline for 18 years, working on randomized controlled trials that examine tobacco use among vulnerable populations, like pregnant women and low-income groups. Her current interest is working with health care systems to better help people quit smoking, including the integration of electronic health records with the Helpline to send electronic referrals.
